GEAS Researchers Attend the 2022 Population Association of America (PAA) Conference

In April 2022, the Global Early Adolescent Study (GEAS) made a splash at the Population Association of America’s (PAA) 2022 Annual Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia with two presentations exploring gendered aspects of adolescents’ health and well-being.  The PAA conference is an annual gathering of demographers, social and behavioral scientists, epidemiologists, and other public health researchers studying issues related to population health and development.

This year, GEAS study team members Dr. Caroline Moreau (Director of Research of GEAS and Associate Professor at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (JHSPH)), Dr. Linnea Zimmerman (Technical Advisor of GEAS and Assistant Professor at JHSPH), and Dr. Celia Karp (Technical Advisor of GEAS and Assistant Scientist at JHSPH) attended the conference and shared recent GEAS research conducted in collaboration with GEAS partners, Dr. Eric Mafuta and Dr. Aimee Lulebo, at the University of Kinshasa School of Public Health, Kinshasa, DRC.  The first presentation entitled, “Gender Disparities in Young People’s Agency Over the Course of Adolescence in Kinshasa: Results from the Global Early Adolescent Study” (led by Dr. Zimmerman) was featured in a session entitled, “Gender Inequality in Low- and Middle-Income Countries”.  On the final day of the conference, Dr. Moreau presented “Gender, Sexual Norms, Romance, and Sexual Debut in Early Adolescence: A Longitudinal Study Among Adolescents in Kinshasa”” in a session on the “Conceptualization and Measurement of Gender Attitudes”.

As the GEAS continues to evolve with multi-country cohorts of adolescents, we are excited to share our findings with researchers around the world as we seek to improve understanding and measurement of gender socialization and its impact on health and wellness for populations globally!
