Brazil

Sited located in São Paulo, Brazil

Background
Brazil is home to over 30 million adolescents (individuals aged 10 to 19), representing approximately 14% of the national population. Around 60% live in urban areas marked by significant social vulnerability, such as favelas or marginalized communities.

The GEAS study in Brazil was conducted in the city of São Paulo. In the specific peripheral community where the study took place, approximately 15,000 adolescents aged 10 to 14 reside, accounting for roughly 7.5% of the total local population. A critical aspect of this setting is the pronounced socio-spatial segregation that characterizes the city, with peripheral zones predominantly inhabited by low-income populations.

In 2021, a total of 996 adolescents aged 10 to 14 were interviewed in their homes, located in the targeted peripheral area. Data collection was conducted by trained interviewers, with assistance from Community Health Agents to locate the adolescents and obtain parental consent. Interviews were carried out using mobile tablets equipped with computer-assisted self-interviewing (CASI) technology.

The São Paulo Research Foundation, FAPESP, funded the study (17/23177-4).
