GEAS Training Suite: Qualitative Methods

The Training Suite: Module 2

Phase 1 of the GEAS employed qualitative methods to better understand the gendered lives of adolescents around the world. These data were used to inform the measures that would later be used in Phase 2. In Phase 2, a COVID-19 sub study was conducted which included focus group discussions to understand the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the daily lives of adolescents.

By the end of this module you should be able to…

  • Describe qualitative techniques employed in the GEAS.
  • Understand and engage critically with common qualitative research methods.
  • Begin developing skills in narrative interviewing.

This section will provide the theoretical background for commonly used qualitative techniques in the GEAS. We recommend using the presentations with the accompanying video lectures that provide deeper explanation and group exercises.
